Aiko, Kiki and Aisha April 2012

Aiko, Kiki and Aisha are enjoying their new mound which we have recently built inside their enclosure. Cheetahs in general like to be high up so they can see into the far distance (and look out for predators and prey). In the wild they would seek out termite mounds and sit on top of them. So we thought we'd simulate this for our loveable trio. It's now become their favourite hang out place and they're always spotted sitting on top, looking around at their surroundings.

Kiki surprised some of our N/a'an ku se visitors recently whilst out on a walk through the veldt.  During their gentle stroll, Kiki was distracted by a springbok she caught a glimpse of in the distance and the next minute, Kiki bolted! She chased after the springbok towards Marlice's house, as Johannes who was leading the walk, chased after her. Our guests just stared on in amazement not quite sure what to do!

Johannes called Marlice and Rudie for help as Johannes inevitably struggled to keep pace with the world's fastest species. Fortunately, before long poor Kiki grew tired and gave up on the springbok and Johannes was able to catch up with her. This is normal for cheetahs as they are sprinters, designed to run incredibly fast across short distances, but they do not have stamina for a lengthy hunt or chase.

Aiko, Kiki and Aisha had the honour of meeting 4 times Olympic Gold medalist rower Sir Matthew Pinsent CBE and Namibian Olympic hopeful athlete Merlin Diamond, during the filming of the UK's BBC World Olympic Dreams programme. In the run up to the 2012 Olympics, the programme features athletes from all over the world following their training and preparation for the games. They visited N/a'an ku se and spent time with the trio in their camp, to highlight the comparison between a human and wildlife sprinter. The programme aired in January 2012 and you can watch it here: http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/olympic_games/world_olympic_dreams/9680945.stm

Our famous cheetahs also took part in a photoshoot in Kolmanskop, the Ghost Town of Lüderitz. Photographer Andrea Zini came from Italy to capture our magnificent cheetahs with models showing off a new range of designer handbags. Aiko, Kiki and Aisha merely enjoyed the change of scenery and the photographic fees go towards feeding and keeping our cheetahs healthy, as we are reliant on this income as well as ecotourism and generous donations to run our Wildlife Sanctuary.

Back at home Aiko, Kiki and Aisha still love their cuddle time and even enjoy a little snooze as they relax in good company.
